OVERVIEW

Unmind provides science-backed products and services to support employee wellbeing and enhance organisational performance across a global client base. Our platform is designed to serve three primary user groups: Employees, Managers, and HR Leaders.

In a climate where organisations are being asked to do more with less, Unmind empowers businesses to foster happy, healthy, and engaged workforces. We help create environments where employees can thrive, managers lead with confidence, and HR leaders are equipped to drive meaningful impact on key metrics such as retention, absenteeism, presenteeism, and overall business performance.

MY ROLE​

As Director of User Experience, I led a team of Product Designers and User Researchers embedded across multiple cross-functional product teams. I collaborated closely with leaders in Product, Engineering, Data, Marketing, and Science to champion strategic, user-centered decision-making. I was responsible for maintaining a high-quality user experience, while ensuring product teams were equipped with the insights and frameworks they needed to make informed, impactful decisions aligned with business aspirations.

DESIGN EXCELLENCE
In 2023, alongside a shift in our strategic proposition, we partnered with London-based agency Ragged Edge to complete a full rebrand. This involved redefining our brand identity to align with our evolved mission—ensuring a cohesive, inspiring experience across every user touchpoint.

PRODUCT TEAMS​​

We had four key product teams, each focused on delivering value to different aspects of the user experience:

 

CORE WELLBEING & VIRTUAL COACH

This team enabled employees to monitor, manage, and improve their mental health and wellbeing over time, including the development of an AI-powered coach.

 

UNMIND TALK
Focused on delivering a high-quality online therapy and coaching experience for both employees and practitioners.

 

UNMIND FOR LEADERS

Equipped managers and organisational leaders with tools to monitor team wellbeing and access tips, training, and resources to foster positive workplace cultures.

 

ENTERPRISE READINESS

Ensured Unmind’s infrastructure could effectively support enterprise-level clients, addressing scalability, security, and integration needs.

01 RESEARCH​

We conducted extensive qualitative and quantitative research, collaborating closely with the Science team to deeply understand the challenges employees faced in their work environments. Through stakeholder workshops, we identified four primary user archetypes:

CURIOUS SKIMMER

Looked for quick, actionable solutions to specific problems.

 

THE PRAGMATIST
Was sceptical about mental health, with limited understanding, but showed curiosity and openness to learning more.

 

MENTAL HEALTH ENTHUSIAST
Actively engaged with wellbeing practices and had a strong foundational knowledge of mental health.

 

FEELINGS FIGHTER
Was reluctant to seek help publicly, but open to exploring mental health resources privately.

We interviewed managers across a range of industries and identified four primary archetypes:

THE FACILITATOR
Focused on team efficiency but did not typically see wellbeing as part of their role.

 

THE COACH
Supported team members’ career development and was open to learning about mental health.

 

THE GUARDIAN
Was passionate about management, viewed team wellbeing as a core responsibility, and actively looked for ways to improve mental health support.

02 PRIMARY OPPORTUNITY​

Managers needed live, ongoing mental health training and seamless access to company policies and wellbeing resources. This presented an opportunity to equip leaders with timely, practical support—enabling them to respond confidently to their teams’ needs and foster psychologically safe work environments.

03 SOLUTION

​

MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING

We designed engaging, video-based training—developed in collaboration with psychologists - to equip managers with the confidence and tools to support both their teams and their own mental wellbeing. The content was tailored to real-world challenges, making it practical, relatable, and immediately actionable.​

SCENARIO GUIDES

We created concise, scenario-based guides to help managers navigate sensitive conversations and situations with clarity and care. These on-the-spot resources empowered leaders to respond effectively in the moments that mattered most.Customised Company ResourcesWe introduced a feature allowing organisations to add bespoke wellbeing and policy resources directly into the Unmind platform. This ensured employees and managers could easily access relevant, company-specific support in one centralised location.

HR LEADER PRODUCT
 
01 RESEARCH

We interviewed HR leaders responsible for employee wellbeing to better understand their goals and challenges. Their needs centred around increasing awareness and engagement, while making data-driven decisions to improve employee wellbeing.

 

From this research, we identified two key archetypes:

THE QUICK-WIN SEEKER
Focused on short-term, reactive goals—such as preventing sickness absence and maintaining high performance.

​​

THE STRATEGISER
Took a longer-term, holistic approach to wellbeing, considering workplace culture and environment as critical drivers of sustained employee health and performance.

​

02 PRIMARY OPPORTUNITY​

Research revealed a clear need for a unified platform that combined qualitative and quantitative data—empowering HR leaders to better understand employee wellbeing and make informed, strategic decisions.

​

03 SOLUTION

We designed a survey and analytics tool that gave HR teams anonymised insights into key wellbeing metrics—such as absenteeism, presenteeism, and burnout. Data could be segmented by team or location, and benchmarking features allowed organisations to compare their results against industry standards.

IMPACT

Adopted by 34 clients, including Bain, KPMG, and Uber.
